Old, New, Borrowed & Blue Ideas
The bridal tradition of "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" has been said to have its origins in a Victorian-era British poem, according to Country Weddings. "Something old" is a show of the bride's connection to her family history, "something new" represents the feeling of excitement for the future, "something borrowed" shows the faith that the bride has in the support of her friends and family and "something blue" is to show the bride's purity and faithfulness to her groom.

Bridal Veil
-
Some brides use their mother or grandmother's bridal veil as something old. In some families the bridal veil is passed down to the next generation and has been in the family for many years.
Wedding Ring
-
The engagement ring is used as a symbol of the love between the bride and the groom, and the wedding ring can be used as a symbol of the bride's commitment to maintaining wedding traditions passed down by previous generations. A wedding ring passed from mother to daughter is often a symbolic way of getting something old.

Picture Locket
-
As a symbol of the bride's anticipation of a long life together with her groom, a silver picture locket can be something new. The locket would have a recent picture of the bride on one side, and the groom on the other. The bride would wear it during the ceremony and can choose to store it when the wedding is over, or wear it for the rest of her life, encapsulating her and her groom on their wedding day.
Shoes
-
The bridal gown can be symbolic from the veil to the shoes. A bride can consider the shoes for her bridal gown as something new to keep with the bridal tradition. For a more comfortable reception, the bride may want to consider bridal sneakers to keep her feet comfortable. Bridal sneakers can be decorated with a variety of materials including beads, veil material and glitter.
Bracelet
-
One of the things a bride can borrow from a friend or family member is a bracelet. There may be a bracelet that the bride's mother has worn for years that the bride can wear on her wedding day. The bride's best friend may have a handmade bracelet she wears that the bride can borrow for that special day.
Earrings
-
Jewelry can be a good borrowed item for the bride. If there is a member of the bride's family or circle of friends that has a special pair of earrings then those can be used as part of the bridal outfit. Be sure to clean the earrings thoroughly prior to using them and before returning them.
Blue Necklace
-
For the new bride, something blue can be a necklace. The necklace can be made of blue gemstones such as sapphires, or it can be a simple necklace made of blue beads.
Purse
-
A blue purse can add some color to the bridal gown, and it does not have to be part of the bride's ensemble. When pictures are being done, the bride can put her blue purse down if she chooses.
