Whether financial aid is specifically for writing majors or not, many require a writing piece as part of the application.

Creative writing includes works such as poetry, fiction or screenplays. For aspiring students or professionals interested in creative writing, there are many scholarships, fellowships and grants available.

  1. The Armistead Maupin Creative Writing Scholarship

    • Students entering or pursuing post-secondary education in literary arts, liberal arts or creative writing can apply for the Armistead Maupin Creative Writing Scholarship. The scholarship is only available to students in financial need within Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They cannot be members of the Armistead Maupin Scholarship Review Committee or employees or board members of Equity Foundation. It is offered through Equity Foundation and began to encourage all students regardless of gender or sexual orientation to develop their creative writing skills.

    Creative Writing Literature Fellowship

    • Offered by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA), the Creative Writing Literature Fellowship awards $25,000 twice a year in the areas of creative non-fiction, fiction or poetry. It is open only to published creative writers and provides these funds so that the recipient has more time for his writing, travel, research and career advancement. The candidate may only apply to one of the three areas and each area has specific qualifications of the published works.

    Wallace Stegner Fellowship

    • The Wallace Stegner Fellowship is offered through Stanford for working creative writers in the areas of fiction and poetry on any topics. The fellowship offers a living stipend of $26,000 per year, tuition and health insurance and does not require any degrees or tests for admission. It is designed to provide practice and perfection of the writer's skills. The applicant must live close enough to Stanford to attend three-hour workshops with faculty, events and readings. There are 10 two-year fellowships offered.

    ACC Writers Studio Scholarship

    • The Writers Studio Scholarship is available to students attending Arapahoe Community College (ACC) in Littleton, Colorado who are enrolled in the Introduction to Creative Writing Course. It offers up to $500 and requires the student to submit a 500-word essay describing her background in writing and how winning this scholarship will benefit her career or personal goals. She must also include a portfolio of five pages from any genre or creative work including fiction, play, poetry or non-fiction.

    University of Arizona Scholarships

    • Creative writing students attending the University of Arizona have several scholarships available. These include the Marie Padgett Hamilton Award in English which is rewarded for extraordinary effort in English literature or creative writing; the Mary Helen Richardson Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to students majoring in English or creative writing; the Bill and Jane Spain Scholarship for students majoring in either creative writing or fine arts; and the Robert and Minnie M. Torrance Scholarship in Creative Writing and the John Weston Scholarship in Creative Writing, which are both only for students majoring in creative writing. They are offered to undergraduate students through the College of Humanities and vary in amounts. There are also several graduate scholarships available.
