Whether you're interested in the performance side of music, singing or playing an instrument, or you'd like to turn your love of music into a teaching career, choosing a college with the appropriate music facilities is an important step in your education. Colleges across Canada provide instruction in music composition and performance, starting with short-term diploma programs and going all the way up through the doctorate level. Students in British Columbia who are interested in music will find a variety of schools offering ensembles, practice facilities and even scholarships dedicated to music students.

  1. Kwantlen Polytechnic University

    • Students just beginning their education in music may be interested in Kwantlen Polytechnic University's short-term music foundation certificate or diploma in music or the two-year Associate of Arts degree in music. Concentrations include general studies, comprehensive studies or performance studies focusing on voice, piano, guitar or orchestral instrument. Coursework includes topics such as the Language of Music, History of Music, Music in Civilization and Diploma Aural Musicianship. Program applicants are required to interview and audition. A variety of music-related scholarships are available, including the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Entering Music Student Awards, the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Music Department Award and the Westcoast Harmony Chorus Vocal Scholarship. Students participate in a variety of instrument or choral groups and put on concerts and performances throughout the year.

    University of British Columbia School of Music

    • The University of British Columbia School of Music offers a variety of bachelor's programs in music, including areas such as composition, advanced performance, music education in secondary schools and general studies in music. Master's degrees and short-term diplomas are also available. Students must audition for the school either in person or through a video. The school offers a number of student ensembles, such as concert winds, chamber music, jazz ensemble and symphony orchestra, plus concerts throughout the year in the 289-seat recital hall or 1200-seat Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The School of Music provides a health center, student counseling, library, academic advising, mentorship, discounted performance tickets and a Music Undergraduate Student Association.

    University of Victoria

    • Students at either the bachelor or graduate level of music study may find a path of education at the University of Victoria's School of Music, offering bachelor's degrees in composition and theory, music education, performance and music history. Master's degrees include musicology, performance and composition; a Ph.D. in musicology is also available. All students, regardless of major, are required to take four years' study of a selected instrument and perform in concerts throughout the year. Each winter, the University of Victoria puts on more than 130 concerts. Resources include a 220-seat recital hall, 40 practice rooms, 1300-seat auditorium, a library of 45,000 recordings and three digital music studios. Students may be interested to know that the school awards $140,000 in scholarships every year.
