Men's fashion is occasionally criticized for offering few choices for men wanting to stand out. Although the choices for a formal affair seem limited at first (suit or tuxedo), picking the right ensemble can be difficult when all of the details are considered. Traditional Collar

The traditional collar, sometimes called the straight collar is the most common style of collar, according to Execshirts.com. Straight collars have crisp folds that end in points at each side. When the shirt is buttoned, there is a slight spread (gap between sides of the collar) that a tie fits neatly into. A variation on the traditional collar, the European collar, is cut the exactly the same as the traditional collar, but the stitching is around the edge instead of a quarter-inch away from the edge of the collar.

Like a traditional collar, the rounded collar has crisp folds and a slight spread. However, instead of pointed edges, the edges are rounded. This softer look is sometimes referred to as "The Great Gatsby Collar," since the style was popular in the 1920s, Execshirts.com explains.

The button-down collar looks much like a traditional collar, except the corners of the collar are held down with buttons, giving it a slightly more formal look. Although many button-down collars feature the buttons on the shirt just under the collar (making them visible when buttoned through the collar), some button-down collars have buttons sewn on the underside of the collar that are inserted into buttonholes on the shirt, according to Execshirts.com.

The spread collar is similar to the traditional collar, but the spread is much larger, allowing more room for the full Windsor and half Windsor knots often used when tying a tie for a formal function, according to MensFlair.com. Spread collars have sharper angles than traditional collars as well.
Wing Collar

Often considered the most formal collar, the wing collar is shorter with crisp angles and folded down tips. The collar resembles a pair of wings, giving it its name, according to MensFlair.com. Standard ties do not work with wing collars, but they complement bow ties, making them popular for wear with tuxedos.
