RN to BSN Completion Programs

Although an associate degree is the minimum education required to enter the field of registered nursing, students must have a bachelor's degree to enroll in graduate-level nursing programs that lead to careers in specialty fields like nurse management, midwifery or nurse education. A number of colleges in the United States offer RN to BSN completion programs that allow licensed registered nurses to complete the necessary requirements for a baccalaureate degree in a shorter amount of time than a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

  1. Linfield College

    • The American Baptist Church founded Linfield College in 1858 in McMinnville, Oregon, a small town 40 miles from Portland. The school offers its RN to BSN program through the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing entirely online. The program lasts approximately two years and requires coursework in communications, nursing research, professionalism, ethics, leadership, public health, clinical decision-making and healthcare practice. Nurses in the program complete 252 hours of clinical work at hospital locations throughout the Portland area as a part of the required curriculum. Approximately 97 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid while attending Linfield College, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.

    Tuskegee University

    • Famous African American politician Booker T. Washington established Tuskegee University in 1881 in a rural community 40 miles east of Montgomery. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report named the historically-Black college 12th among all baccalaureate colleges in the South. The university's School of Nursing and Allied Health offers a specialized program for RN to BSN students, which allows students to design an individualized curriculum with the help of a nursing adviser. Students take courses necessary to fulfill the requirements of the program that do not overlap with any previously classes taken at other schools. The amount of clinical hours is also adjusted to accommodate nurses' previous experience. Tuskegee University participates in state and federal financial aid and grant programs and grants a limited number of scholarships.

    Stony Brook University

    • A member of the State University of New York system of public colleges, Stony Brook University is located on Long Island, approximately 60 miles from New York City. The college is home to nearly 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students and received U.S. News and World Report's 96th place ranking among all universities in the United States in 2010. The university offers both a traditional and online RN to BSN program through its School of Nursing. Students in the program study research, ethics, medical law, pharmacology, family nursing and health assessment. As an added feature, Stony Brook allows students in the program to continue their studies and receive a master of science in nursing degree by completing only one additional clinical rotation and three extra courses. Approximately 67 percent of students at the university receive some type of financial assistance to offset the cost of tuition, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. As a public college, the university grants tuition discounts to New York residents.
