Clean leather furniture with home remedies that don't contain dangerous chemicals.

Leather furniture is not only stylish, but adds a touch of class and luxury to any room in your home or office. However, cleaning leather furniture can be expensive, whether you opt to have it professionally cleaned or you purchase commercially-prepared leather furniture cleaners. Commercially-prepared leather furniture cleaners can contain toxic chemical solvents that may irritate eyes and skin, with vapors that remain in the air long after the solvent has dried on your furniture, according to the University of Wisconsin. You can prepare home remedies using natural ingredients that will clean your leather furniture just as effectively without any risks to your health. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. General Maintenance

    • Dust your leather furniture regularly with a microfiber or other dry cloth. Moisten the cloth if there is heavy dirt on your leather furniture. Vacuum your leather furniture frequently, making sure to vacuum in all the crevices and along the surfaces of your leather furniture, including underneath. To make an all-purpose leather furniture cleaner, fill a bottle with one part food-grade linseed oil and one part white vinegar. Shake the mixture well and apply it with a clean, lint-free cloth to your leather furniture using a circular motion, covering all the surfaces. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then buff with a clean cloth to remove excess oil and polish the leather.

    Spots, Spills and Scratches

    • Wipe up any spilled liquid immediately with a clean sponge or cloth. If a spot still remains, lightly dampen a clean cloth or sponge with lukewarm water, gently rub it over the spot and allow it to air dry. You can also mix four parts water to one part white vinegar, apply to a clean cloth and blot the spot or spill. For minor scratches on your leather furniture's surface, moisten the scratch slightly with warm water, then gently buff the scratch using a chamois or clean finger.

    Tough Stains

    • Remove stubborn stains on your leather furniture by applying a dab of toothpaste onto the stain, lightly massage it into the upholstery and remove with a clean cloth. Use mayonnaise to remove water stains from glasses and cups on leather tabletops. Gently rub a small amount of mayonnaise onto the water stains, allow to sit for two hours, then wipe it off with a clean cloth. To remove ink stains from leather furniture, dampen a clean cloth with warm water and massage it into the ink stain, using a circular motion. If the ink stain remains, apply a small amount of alcohol to a cotton ball, dab the alcohol on the stain, then use a blow dryer to dry the area. Mix equal parts of tartar and lemon juice to remove scuff marks from your leather furniture. Apply to the scuff marks, leave on for 10 minutes and then wipe-off with a clean, damp cloth.
