Know the signs of shingles during pregnancy.

The signs of shingles are the same for pregnant women and those who are not. However, it is crucial for pregnant women to talk to their health care provider as soon as possible after contracting shingles. The virus can cause birth defects in a developing fetus as well as harm the mother if she has a weakened immune system. Knowing the signs and symptoms of shingles can help protect you and your baby while pregnant.

  1. Burning Skin

    • One of the earliest signs of shingles is a burning or sometime tingling pain under the skin. This pain is mild for some people and intense for others. Numbness may also be associated with the pain. As the shingles progress, the pain may intensify. Many people with shingles may experience spasms of pain at the slightest touch of the skin.

    Blisters and Rash

    • After two to three days of pain and burning under the skin, a pregnant woman with shingles will develop small blisters and a rash. Typically, these blisters are located on the face or torso. After the blisters drain, open sores will develop then scab over. Although the scabs will heal in a couple of weeks, many people report feeling pain from shingles for several weeks or months thereafter.

    Other Symptoms

    • While the signs of shingles are primarily skin-related, there can be other symptoms, such as chills and a fever, an upset stomach or headache.
