Colorado is home to several private art colleges, as well as colleges and universities that contain large studio art departments. Art students in Colorado can work toward professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in a wide variety of studio areas, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, metalsmithing, fibers, photography and graphic design. Some of Colorado's art schools also offer Bachelor of Arts (BA) and associate's degree programs as well as professional diploma programs and continuing education.

  1. Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design

    • The Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, commonly abbreviated as RMCAD, is a private art school that was founded in 1963. As of 2009, the school had about 450 undergraduates. RMCAD students can work toward the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in animation, art education, fine arts, game art, graphic design, illustration or interior design. Fine arts students can concentrate in painting, photo and video or sculpture. All students must complete the interdisciplinary foundation studies curriculum before selecting a major. Students who elect to take classes in the summer trimester can complete the BFA degree in three years, rather than four.

    Colorado College Art Department

    • Colorado College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1874. Colorado college art majors can concentrate in either studio art or art history. Students concentrating in studio art must complete a certain amount of art history credits in addition to their studio work. Studio concentrators must present an exhibition of their work in the final year. Students can also choose to complete a minor in studio art and art history. Art majors and minors also have the opportunity to complete a second major or minor in another department at the college. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked Colorado College 24th among the nation's liberal arts colleges.

    • The department of art within Colorado State University's School of the Arts offers a wide variety of degree programs for undergraduates and graduate students. Undergraduates can work toward the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, graphic design, fibers, pottery or metalsmithing, or the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in art education, art history or studio art. Graduate students can work toward the professional Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, fibers or metalsmithing.

    The Art Institute of Colorado

    • The Art Institute of Colorado, established as the Colorado Institute of Art in 1952, now belongs to the system of schools known as the Art Institutes. As of 2009, the school had about 2,000 students working toward Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees, Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees and professional diplomas in design, fashion, media arts and the culinary arts. In addition to its degree and diploma programs, the school also offers evening, weekend and continuing education programs.
