Decorate a school Halloween carnival with balloons adorned with spiders and ghost.

School carnivals provide a day for children, their families and teachers can get to know each other better while they raise money for the school. Hosting a school carnival in the fall presents the opportunity for a Halloween-themed event sure to delight ghosts and goblins of every age. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Games

    • Woman'sDay Magazine offers a twist on classic carnival games, reinventing them with a ghoulish theme. Knock 'Em-Sock 'Em traditionally presents players with a bulls-eye target at the top of a wooden base that must be knocked down with a ball. In the Halloween version, Head Game, players are on a mission to take out monsters in the form of plastic masks attached the base. To keep the fun going, ditch the traditional bobbing for apples, and opt for a game of Jumping For Doughnuts, in which players try to retrieve donuts that are strung on a cotton string attached to two 4-foot-high poles held above their head. For a final game booth, forget the boring beanbag toss and go with a Blood Drive game in which players attempt to toss a red balloon filled with beans into the mouth of giant vampire drawn onto a paint tarp hanging at the back of the booth.

    Food

    • No carnival is complete without booths offering mouthwatering classics such as cotton candy and candy apples. To keep with the Halloween theme, you can offer up popular fare with Halloween twist, as suggested by the Celebrations website. Along with the traditional candy apples, coat some with chocolate and drizzle them with orange frosting or chocolate and top with Halloween candy pieces Serve these along with Orange and Black Popcorn--bags of popcorn coated with orange cheese and chocolate. A booth of savory foods is sure to be a big hit as well, such as personal pizzas topped to resemble jack-o'-lanterns, potato snakes in place of French fries and Halloween hamburgers.

    Entertainment

    • When carnival-goers are not busy playing games and sampling the food, keep them busy with a variety of haunting entertainment booths. Hire a professional face painter to transform children into their favorite Halloween spook, whether it is a vampire or a green goblin. Another option is a photo booth, decorated with a backdrop of Frankenstein and his bride with holes where their faces should be. Children can put their faces atop the bodies and have a photo taken. The template is available on the Woman'sDay Magazine's website. Let your participants express themselves creatively during the event by setting up a pumpkin painting booth. Have small pumpkins, various brushes and sponges along with tempera or finger paints so anyone can decorate their own pumpkin.
