The game of volleyball can be a fast-paced game and players can benefit from drills during practices. Like with any sport, volleyball requires repetition and drills during practices to instill certain fundamentals such as hitting, serving, passing and setting.

  1. Tips

    • Repetition is key when learning a new skill. Drills need to be repeated to help players become better at a certain skill.

Always stretch before doing any drills.

Put a variety of drills into your practice repertoire.

Players should practice reaction times and quickness on their feet. Endurance is needed in this game, especially if it's a long game or there happens to be a long rally.

    Passing

    • Set up two cones on the volleyball court. Set the cones in a line that parallels the volleyball net. Have one player (Player A) stand between the cones and run behind one cone, around, back to the middle and behind the other cone. This should resemble a figure eight pattern.

Player B stands as the target, where you want to aim the ball. Every time Player A comes around one of the cones, Player B tosses the ball between the two cones. Player A should pass the ball toward Player B. Player A should constantly be shuffling around the cones in a figure eight pattern while Player B keeps tossing the ball for Player A to pass.

The distance from Player B and Player A can vary, depending on how far you want to make the pass. Set a time limit such as one minute for each player.

    Hitting

    • Have players partner up with one ball. Begin by having Player A throwing the ball softly with both hands over her head to Player B. This is repeated back and forth.

Next, each player throws the ball with one hand over his head, almost directly down toward Player B. This is repeated back and forth.

Then, Player A tosses the ball slightly above her head and hits it with her hitting hand toward Player B, snapping her wrist as if she were hitting in a game. Player B repeats this until both players are warmed up.

    Setting

    • Take a ball carrier and have Player A toss a ball above Player B's head. Player B then sets the ball into the ball carrier. Continue this until a set goal has been made. Have player B set a certain number of balls into the carrier from varying distances.

    Serving

    • Have players make so many serves in the court in a row. If a player misses a serve, that player has to start over until that target number is met. When players are able to get all their serves in consistently, pick a zone for players to hit.
