Solar panels capture sunlight and turn it into usable energy. The energy is stored in cells within the panels and held for use when it is needed in a home or business. The panels themselves can be quite expensive, particularly if many panels will be needed to provide enough energy for a business facility. Many grants and tax incentives are available at both the state and federal level to help offset the cost of moving to solar power.

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), is a federal organization that distributes funds for solar energy grants. This group focuses on providing significant grant money to finance solar panel installation and operation, and in many cases will fund the entire project. Since 2008, the Obama administration has increased funding to help build more renewable energy resources in the U.S. and provided additional tax incentives to business and individuals who install solar panels and other renewable energy resources.

To apply for grants for a business or personal use, contact the office at:

Database for State Incentives and Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE)

DSIRE is a resource for companies and individuals seeking state, local, utility and federal incentives and funds that support renewable energy projects. This group was established in 1995, is and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and provides information on smaller grants available in addition to larger grants offered by the federal government. One advantage of working with DSIRE is that this group will help a company or individual locate and utilize local and state tax breaks.
