Halloween Balloon Decorating Ideas

Halloween is a time for getting together with friends, having fun and food, and enjoying a good scare. The right balloons can add to the effect of the holiday, and they can really make the difference between a boring, mood-less party and a party where guests are involved in the spirit of the night. Many of these decorations can also double as activity props.

    1. Balloon Spiders

      • Balloon spiders will add spookiness to any Halloween event. Start with five long black balloons and two small white balloons for eyes. Blow up the two white balloons first. Make them the size of an orange and tie the two eyes together. Draw black circles on the ends for eyeballs. Blow up one black balloon almost completely. Wrap one end of the balloon around the two eyeball balloons, and twist into place. Make another twist about 8 inches down from the balloon head, and fold the balloon in half. Twist the balloon together to make the spider’s body. Make one final fold with the very end of the balloon and twist it in place. This will produce a three-part body with a small tail. Fold the tail back around to the eyes, and twist into place. This four-part balloon stack is the spider’s body. Inflate the four leg balloons almost all the way. Twist one leg balloon about ¼ inch of the way from the end, and twist a small bubble next to the twisted section. Repeat from the other end of balloon. You will end up with six sections of balloon that will make two legs. Repeat with the other three balloons. Attach one set of legs to the head, and attach the other three sets through the middle of the body.

      Spooky Arch

      • Create a spooky arch from white, black or orange balloons, or a combination of several different colors. Purchase two sand weights, and fill up 20 balloons with helium. Attach a line of fishing line to either end of the weights, making it long enough to make an arch 6 to 7 feet high. Tie the balloons to the fishing wire. The helium inside the balloons with cause the arch to rise. Attach crepe paper to the wire to hang down inside the arch. In a haunted house, this causes a startling effect on passersby. You can also add a fan to blow on the paper to make the arch whisper and move in a creepy way.

      Balloon Drop

      • A balloon drop is an exciting finish to a haunted house or other Halloween party. Purchase a large net and fill it with spooky-colored balloons. Hang the net from the ceiling. When guests enter the room, release the balloons so that they fall on the guests. This method combines a decoration and activity in one.
