Resumes are one of the most common tools that people use when applying for jobs. The resume is usually one to three pages long and highlights a person's job experience and education. That way the potential employer can match the job specifications of current openings with a person's background, to interview the most qualified candidates. Following are some of the good qualifications that an individual should include in their resume.
It is important to summarize key skills on a resume that are related to a job. The reason this is important to include is so the hiring manager can quickly identify that you are qualified for the job. Some career consultants suggest that a person's summary of skills be placed directly below the career objective and above any job experience. Important job skills can include communication, organizational, analytical, computer and even management skills. Elaborate on your skills and include the industries or type of work you performed using these skills.
Another good qualification to include in a resume is job experience. You should spend a lot of time thinking about all of the duties you performed on different jobs in your career, then choose about three bullet points to describe the main aspects of each job. Some of your key skills should be mentioned throughout each job summary so that your resume stays consistent. The frequent mentioning of job skills will further enhance your experience level in the eyes of the interviewer or hiring manager. Use action verbs to describe your experience like executed, managed, developed, wrote and designed.
The third bullet point should include a key accomplishment in terms of situation, action and results (SAR). Tell the reader what your responsibilities were, how you accomplished your goal and include any monetary or numeric values. For example, if you increased sales by 15% in your territory, include that fact.
Your education is always a good or important qualification to include in your resume. Some jobs require a certain minimum educational requirement like a baccalaureate degree. Your chances of getting an interview often hinge upon you meeting that minimum requirement. Exceeding the minimal requirements can only improve your chances of getting an interview, unless you are way overqualified for the jobs.
It also is helpful if you list any computer skills, such as experience with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint or Lotus 123. The ability to use a computer as well as the Internet is vital today. Explain whether your skills are beginner, intermediate or more advanced. Mention the number of years you have worked with various software programs.
