Christmas cupcakes add a festive touch to the dessert while appealing to a wide range of people both young and old. Cupcakes are simple to bake and decorate, making them a project that the whole family can do together. The holiday theme lends itself well to a variety of cupcake decoration ideas. Christmas cupcake liners carry the festive theme to the base of the desserts.
Holly leaves offer a simple topper for Christmas cupcakes. Cover each cupcake with a swirl of icing in a light color such as white. Add a dusting of white, red or green decorative sugar to the icing. Flatten a green gumdrop for each holly leaf. Use a small holly leaf cookie cutter on the flattened gumdrop. Another option is to use a knife to cut the leaf shape. Place two holly leaves on each cupcake. Place three round red candies where the two leaves meet to create the berries.
Take advantage of the round cupcake tops by turning them into ornaments. Ice the cupcakes in different colors for variety in the edible ornaments. Use contrasting colors of icing to add details on the ornaments. Ideas include dots, swirls, stripes and zigzags. Small round candies also work well to create designs on the ornaments. Place a marshmallow at one edge to create the hanger for the ornament.
The round shape of cupcakes also work well for creating an elf face. Ice the cupcakes with a flesh tone color of icing. Use icing to create eyes, a nose, large pointy ears and a smile. Fondant works well for creating an elf's hat. Fondant is available at craft stores and is malleable like clay. Red or green works well for the elf hats. Knead the fondant and mold it into the shape of an elf's hat. Place it at the top of the elf's head. Other Christmas character faces such as Santa, reindeer and snowmen also work for the cupcake tops.
The arrangement of the cupcakes offers another connection to the Christmas theme. Decorate the cupcakes individually and arrange them on the serving tray in a Christmas shape. Options that work well include a Christmas tree, candy cane, stocking or Santa's face. Add details using frosting to make the cupcakes look more like the larger object. For a Christmas tree, ice the cupcakes in green. Add round candies or sprinkles to the cupcake tops for the ornaments. Add licorice whips as garlands.
