People Skills in the Workplace


The workplace is the one environment that can provide the most stress for many individuals. After all, it's an area where there is both power and a total lack of power. Whereas you might have control over situations in your home life, in your workplace, things might be out of your control. That's why you need to make sure you have the proper people skills.

Positive Attitude

  • Possibly the most important workplace people skill that you can have is a positive attitude. It's easy to get sucked into negative emotions when we're at work, but that only leads to resentment and depression.

Active Listening

  • When you're in the workplace, make sure that you practice active listening. Make sure that you're actually listening to what is being said to you. Many people only listen to enough of a conversation in order to prepare what their response is going to be. In active listening, you focus your entire attention on the speaker. Then, you process what has been said and you repeat it back to the speaker, so that they understand that their words have been heard. With a little practice, active listening can become second nature.

Team Playing

  • One of the best people skills that you can use is to be a team player. When you see a co-worker needing some assistance, offer whatever you can to help out. This strengthens workplace bonds and it reinforces the notion that all of you in the workplace are part of something larger than yourselves. By the same token, when the time comes for you to get some assistance, those who you've helped out will remember what you've done and will reciprocate.


  • If you really want to hone your people skills in the workplace, you'll want to make sure colleagues know that they can come to you when there's a problem. In order to do this, you need to make yourself approachable. When you ask a co-worker how things are going, don't ask that out of politeness. Ask it out of a genuine interest in that person. Knowing that you're actually concerned about his welfare will make him more likely to come to you when something is bothering him or when there is a problem in the workplace that needs to be addressed.


  • In the workplace, people are going to fail at tasks or goals. It's human nature. Rather than attacking them for failing, let those around you know that failing simply means that an attempt was made. The only surefire way to make sure that you never fail is to never try, and that's not going to make for a productive workplace.
