Types of Alkaline Saltsthumbnail
Alkaline salts have many health benefits

Alkaline salts, or basic salts, are those which have ions such as hydroxide or carbonate. These salts are soluble, i.e. can dissolve in water. Unlike most salts, alkaline salts aren't neutral; rather they are bases (have a pH that exceeds 7). Alkaline salts are used to find out how much acid can be added to water without changing its pH, in addition, alkaline salts are essential for proper bodily function and have different health benefits.

    1. Sodium Bicarbonate

      • Sodium bicarbonate (bicarb soda) was discovered 60 years ago and is found in baking soda. Medicinally, it is used for reducing the acidity in muscles and the blood. Bicarb soda also provides the body with a power boost, thus increasing its endurance. For the latter reason, sports personnel and body builders are recommended to have diets which are rich with this alkaline salt. Iron Power states that the intake of sodium carbonate reduces work-related stress, thus avoiding the psychological dangers that prolonged stress can present.

      Potassium

      • Potassium is an alkaline salt which oxidizes quickly in air and reacts just as fast with water to generate heat. Usually potassium is found in seawater and as a part of many minerals. This alkaline salt is needed for the functioning of all living cells, plus it is a part of human and animal tissue. Tools for Healing recommends that you should take a daily average of four to five grams of potassium. However, an overdose can cause problems such as mental confusion, weakness, angst and heart arrhythmia. For these reasons, measure amounts accurately.

      Magnesium

      • Magnesium is an alkaline salt which is available in large quantities in the Earth's crust. Due to its high solubility, magnesium is often found in seawater. This element is available in abundance in the human body and is essential for living cells as it plays an important role in controlling molecules like DNA and RNA. For an individual to remain healthy, 400 grams daily are recommended. Overdose problems aren't that severe, however precautions must be taken in cases where kidney failure or AV blocks (impaired flow between the ventricle and atria inside the heart) are present.

      Calcium

      • Calcium is a soft gray alkaline salt which is found in the Earth's crust as well as in seawater. Calcium is an essential life-ingredient because it plays a role in cell physiology; the movement of calcium ions triggers other cellular processes. In addition, this salt mineralizes the bones and shells of living creatures. An average daily intake for a healthy human is between 1200 and 2000 milligrams per day. There are no obvious side effects of taking calcium supplements, however individuals with hyperparathyroid problems or vitamin D intoxication need to consult a physician before taking calcium supplements.
