Types of Bluetooth Adapters

Bluetooth technology allows electronic devices to communicate without connecting wires. Bluetooth technology involves broadcasting information over radio waves with a reach of about 33 feet. If you want to use Bluetooth to connect devices, but one device does not have Bluetooth capabilities, there are adapters to help make the connection.

  • Audio equipment manufacturer Bose has technology that allows you to wirelessly broadcast MP3s or Internet radio from your computer to a music player in a different room. No software needs to be installed onto your computer--only a USB key is plugged in to start music broadcasts. LG offers a universal Bluetooth USB adapter that allows your computer to connect to any Bluetooth-enabled device. The USB adapter resembles a USB storage drive and comes with installation software. Similar universal Bluetooth USB adapters are made by CC&C Technologies, Logitech, and other manufacturers.

Mobile Phones

  • Lintech offers a Bluetooth adapter that connects a non-Bluetooth-enabled headset to a phone with Bluetooth technology. After the adapter and phone are set up, connections occur automatically once the phone is within range of the adapter. Motorola has similar Bluetooth headset adapters.

MP3 Players

  • Vencer, Smooth and Motorola all manufacture Bluetooth adapters that plug into any iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone's 30 pin connector, located on the bottom of the device. Vencer's adapter does not require software installation; you simply plug it in and start connecting wirelessly to your iPod. Any of the Bluetooth adapters allow an iPod to broadcast to Bluetooth-enabled speakers or headphones.
