Under Arizona law, electricians must obtain a contractor's license through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. This license applies to anyone who wants to "build, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck or demolish any building, highway, road, railroad, excavation or other structure," according to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Before you apply, make sure you meet the minimum requirements.
Anyone wishing to obtain an electrician license in Arizona must be at least 18 years of age.
Applicants need four years of experience as an electrician. This experience can be in the form of a journeyman electrician, supervisory electrician or other related experience. Arizona will count an electrician apprenticeship toward some of the four years. Applicants need to provide proof of work experience, such as pay stubs or affidavits from employers or clients.
To obtain a license in Arizona, electricians need to pay the specific fee for their line of work. In 2010, the fees for a residential contractor are $445 for a new license and $290 for a renewal. Commercial contractor fees are $890 for a new license and $590 for a renewal. Licenses must be renewed every two years.
Electricians need to take an exam before becoming licensed in Arizona. Applicants can register for the exam, which is administered by Prometric, either online or by phone at 800-899-4089. On the exam date, applicants must bring an photo ID and an admission letter. The exam covers general business administration and management as well as electrical currents, conduits, electrical systems and work safety. The electrician exam takes four hours, and all electricians must pass it before becoming licensed. Applicants who fail can retake it as many times as needed to pass.
