You've seen them in suits and headsets outside posh nightclubs checking IDs and guest lists and in jeans and T-shirts keeping the peace at the local bar. No matter what your late-night entertainment spot of choice, security guards and nightclubs go together like gin and tonic. While the industry is relatively easy to get into and there are few job requirements, it's best to possess certain skills to be an effective nightclub security guard.
Even though certain situations may call for it, most security guards work hard to avoid fighting and other physical altercations. Guards must be polite but authoritative and know how to talk to people from all walks of life. Training in conflict management and crowd control can help improve these skills.
The majority of a security guard's job involves standing, walking around and other largely physical activities. It's best that guards be in good shape, so they can handle the demands on their bodies.
Nightclub security is primarily a nocturnal occupation so anyone hoping to work in the industry must be open to working nights and weekends. Depending on the company and the club's requirements, the shifts can sometimes be as short as a couple of hours or last well past the regular eight-hour workday. It's best to be flexible with your schedule and able to roll with these types of changes.
CPR or First Aid Training
Sometimes emergencies happen in clubs that require immediate medical attention. Knowing CPR, first aid and other basic safety techniques can come in handy on the job and make you a valuable member of the team.
In most states, you have to obtain some form of certification or license to become an official security guard, but it is not a requirement to apply for the job. Once you're hired most companies either provide certification or recommend programs you can attend while you train for the job.
