What Are the Duties of a Wellness Director?

Save

In a nutshell, a wellness director promotes healthy living through diet, exercise, special programs and initiatives, education and more. Whether for a company, a health club or a hospital, a wellness director's goal is to help people live longer and healthier lives.

Assessing

  • Wellness directors must first assess the population that they're working with to determine what issues they're facing. Assessment can take place through on-line surveys, in-person discussions or tests, or meetings of managers who witness day-to-day wellness issues. After assessing the most pertinent issues (weight, disease, lack of exercise and so on), a wellness director can then formulate next steps.

Planning

  • A wellness director must also formulate plans for wellness. Such a plan could include a new dance class for members of a senior center, discounts for regular physical exercise for employees at a large company, or lunch-time sessions on eating healthier year-round.

Evaluating

  • In addition, a wellness director must constantly evaluate all programs and initiatives to determine if they are working or if anything needs to be improved or enhanced. She will also meet with other senior executives or employees to discuss wellness-related programs and plans.
