The school year is coming to a close. Parents in the Birmingham, Ala., area will be making plans to find summer time activities to keep the kids busy. To fill the summer days with activities to keep young minds entertained, summer camps can be a reasonable solution. The Birmingham day camp programs will encourage lasting memories and a way to foster friendships. These camps generally run one to two weeks and keep kids out of trouble while parents are at work, and stay-at-home parents that just need a break.

Hilltop Montessori School

  • Hilltop Montessori School provides a summer day camp program for toddlers, preschoolers and elementary age children. Toddlers are taught social skills, colors, shapes and numbers, and will plant an herb garden while enjoying story time and crafts. Preschoolers can expect to plant gardens, make jewelry crafts and create meals with food harvested from their garden. University of Alabama, Birmingham

  • University of Alabama Birmingham has many day camp programs for children. Children ages 7-18 can be enrolled in drama, creative writing, computer science, cheerleading, and sports camps. The camp hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the duration varying between three days to two weeks, depending on what camp(s) the child attends. Camps generally begin in June.

  • Several branches of the YMCA in Birmingham provide summer day camp programs for children in the area. The program has various weekly themes, and children will be taken on field trips to a different location each week. The cost of the field trips is not included in camper registration price. Registration for the summer program begins Feb. 1 When registering your child, an updated immunization form will need to be presented. The day camp hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Birmingham Zoofari Camp

  • The Birmingham Zoo is opening its gates to provide kids with summer day camp activities. Full-day camp programs are held from 8:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Campers can enjoy crafts and activities, explore the world of conservation, learn fascinating facts about animals of long ago, and be up close and personal with animals of the zoo. The camp registration cost includes access to train and carousel rides, and giraffe and sea lion feedings. For an additional fee, campers will be provided lunch, or the campers can bring lunch from home. Full-day and half-day camps are available for kids age 4 through the eighth grade.
