Scotch tape is a brand of adhesive tapes manufactured by the multinational conglomerate 3M, headquartered in Maplewood, Minnesota. Scotch tape is available in four different types including Household and Office tapes, Specialty tapes, Mounting tapes and Dispenser tapes. Scotch tape was invented in 1930 by a 3M engineer named Richard Young, who successfully adhered adhesive to a roll of cellulose. According to the brands official website, 3M produces and estimated 5.5 million miles of Scotch tape each year.
Household and Office Tapes
Scotch lighter duty brands of household and office tapes include "Magic Tape," "Double-Sided Tape" and "Gift-Wrap" tape. Magic tape appears "frosty" while on the roll but is almost invisible when adhered to paper. Scotch "Double-Sided" tape is manufactured with adhesives on both sides and marketed as an equally strong, low-mess alternative to low strength liquid glues. Scotch's brand of "Gift-Wrap" tape is similar to "Magic Tape" but engineered to convey a "unique satin" finish on when adhered to most styles of wrapping paper.
Scotch brand "specialty" tapes are for use in a variety of industrial fields and primarily marketed as aids in moving, shipping and repackaging. The line also includes a segment of tapes geared towards artisans. The Scotch "High Performance Packaging Tape with Heavy Duty Dispenser" is sold with a clear roll of rubber resin adhesive tape affixed on a hand-held application tool constructed of high grade plastic. Scotch tape brands for artists include "Artist Tape," "Low Tack Tape" and "Artist Tape for Curves."
Dispensers and Applicators
Scotch also produces a wide variety of desk top tape dispensing products for the home and office. Their "Home and Office Masking Tape Dispenser" is a reusable tape applicator constructed of heavy duty plastic and offers optimum application power for curved and contoured surfaces. Scotch products like the "Pop-Up Tape Handband Dispenser" and "Pop-Up Tape Portable Dispenser" allow for the affixation of tape dispenser in unconventional places, placing an optimum on convenience and portability.
