Qualifications for a UPS Pilot

United Parcel Service (UPS) hires pilots to fly their cargo airplanes around the country and abroad. UPS has been operating their very own fleet of jets since 1988. UPS is the leading world-wide package delivery company and is a great place for pilots to work. UPS pilots are union workers and can make up to $244 an hour, according to AirlinePilotCentral.com, as of 2010.

Fixed-Wing Pilot Time

  • According to AviaNation.com, a pilot must have 1,500 hours of fixed-wing pilot time in order to qualify for a job as a UPS pilot.

PIC Hours

  • A pilot must also have 1,000 hours of pilot in command (PIC) hours in a fixed-wing jet or a fixed-wing, multi-engine turboprop aircraft. The PIC is responsible for the safety and proper operation of a flight.

FCC-restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit

  • A restricted radiotelephone operator permit (RR) is issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to individuals who are authorized to operate both aeronautical ground stations and aircraft. In order to qualify for an RR, an individual must be a legal resident of the United States, have the ability to hear and speak as well as keep a written log, and be familiar with laws, rules and treaties applicable to their job and the radio station they are operating.

FAA First Class Medical Certificate

  • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that pilots meet specific physical medical requirements in order to fly. If a pilot passes these medical examinations, he is issued an FAA First Class Medical Certificate which certifies that he is able, physically and medically, to fly an aircraft. Pilots must have 20/40 vision (both near and far), and be free of certain medical conditions, such as cardiac arrhythmia.
