Sight words are words that should not be, or cannot be, sounded out by beginning readers. Sight words are also called high-frequency words because they appear in all kinds of text. Students need to memorize these words so they can read more fluently. They should already know most of their letters and letter sounds before learning sight words.
Dolch Preschool Word List
At least 50 percent of the words used in school books, library books, magazines and newspapers come from the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary list. Their preschool list includes: a, and, away, big, blue, can, come, down, find, for, funny, go, help, here, I, in, is, it, jump, little, look, make, me, my, not, one, play, red, run, said, see, the, three, to, two, up, we, where, yellow, you.
Education.com has a slightly different list of sight words for preschoolers. They include: a,at,an,and,am,are, can,do,for,go,have,he,here,in,I,is,it,like, look,me,my,no,play, said, see, she,so,the,to,up,we.
Dr. Fry refined the Dolch word list to include nouns. The list includes 600 words, broken into sets of 100, with four groups per set. They are listed in order of frequency. Preschoolers can learn the first group of the first 100: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he , was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I, at, be, this, have, from.
