There are no official guidelines dictating what experience or education a computer technician should have in order to qualify for the work that he does. Still, there are certain things that computer technicians should know in order to do the job effectively. The Information Technology (IT) field is demanding, fast-paced and constantly changing, so it's important to at least know the basics before you embark on a career in this field.
A computer technician needs strong problem-solving skills to be effective at his job. Computer technicians often run into problems that they have not seen before, and having strong problem-solving skills enables them to arrive at a solution. Because computer technology is constantly changing, computer technicians must come up with new solutions to solve technological issues that they have not encountered in the past.
A computer technician needs to constantly be aware of new technologies and solutions so that he is aware of what software and hardware are current and so that he can find solutions to whatever problems he faces on the job. If a computer technician does not stay current on technological solutions, he may have trouble finding answers for the problems that his clients present to him. Each new operating system, hardware release or software program will present new challenges, so a computer technician must stay current to be effective.
A computer technician should have a firm grasp on software basics to do her job properly. She should know how to maneuver the Internet and basic applications, such as Microsoft Office, Outlook Express, Adobe Reader and virus and spyware software such as Avira AntiVir, Norton AntiVirus and Spybot. A computer technician should know how to run basic computer utilities as well, such as Windows Defragmenter, ScanDisk, Disk Cleanup and the Services Manager.
A computer technician must also have a firm grasp on hardware basics in order to be effective in his position. Computer technicians often have to deal with hardware issues, such as those pertaining to computer peripherals, CD-ROM drives, RAM, heat-sink fans, power supplies, CPUs and other elements of computer hardware. They may also have to service scanners, printers, fax machines and other computer accessories that require an understanding of basic computer hardware.
Computer technicians may also deal with networking issues in their work, so they should have a firm grasp on how computer networking works. This includes not only connecting computers to the Internet, but also connecting computers to one another in business networks and connecting computers and printers or scanners together for wireless printing and scanning. Technicians with a broader understanding of computer networking can service servers or large-scale networks for business clients as well.
