Much like black, denim, navy and khaki, gray is a largely neutral hue that pairs well with many colors. Gray comes in many shades and can vary in degree of warmth. Some shades of gray are cool, with bluer undertones and others are warm, nearing a brown or mushroom color. No matter the shade, the following colors always pair nicely with gray.

Black

Because black matches nearly everything, this color pairs well with gray. When matching black and gray, avoid selecting an overly dark gray as they do not have adequate contrast to create an attention-getting ensemble. Instead, select a cool, steely gray to ensure effective garment pairing. Add silver accessories to further finish the look.

White

White fits well with an assortment of colors, including gray. Contrary to black-matching rules, select dark gray garments to pair with white pieces to ensure contrast. Wear gray pants or a skirt with a white top to draw attention up and bring the focus onto your face.

Yellow

Vivid yellows contrast well with gray, and the two colors can be combined to create a stunning look. Pair your gray skirt with a yellow blouse, or add a yellow scarf over a muted gray dress to add pizazz and excitement to your look.

Purple

Purple is an effective color choice when pairing a garment with a gray piece. Wear multiple shades of purple with differing shades of gray. Darker plum-like shades look great with both dark and light gray, as do lighter lavender-like hues.

Pastels

Pastels of nearly any shade can be paired effectively with gray. Wear a pastel shirt or tie under a deep gray suit, or wear a pastel sweater over a dark gray dress to add a pop of color to your look and give your gray piece a more summery feel.
