Tourist Attractions in Cheyenne, Wyoming
The capital of the state of Wyoming, Cheyenne boasts the largest population of any Wyoming city, with about 57,000 people (2010). Situated just north of the Colorado border in the southeastern part of the state, this urban center hosts the enormous Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo every July. Housed in the historic Union Pacific Railroad Depot, this museum, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, serves as a starting point for touring Cheyenne. It provides information on Cheyenne's place in Wyoming's history, including its ties to the railroad, and has a profusion of free tourist information available. Narrated historic trolley tours of downtown Cheyenne also depart from here.

Constructed in the Renaissance Revival style with sandstone quarried from both Wyoming and Colorado, the Wyoming State Capitol took four years to build, from 1886 to 1890. Genuine 24-karat gold leaf covers the golden dome of the Capitol. The landscaped grounds include statues portraying figures of particular significance to the state of Wyoming, including a cowboy and an American bison.
The Wyoming State Capitol, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (except for government holidays), offers guided tours by appointment between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitors can take self-guided tours of the Capitol building between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on these days as well. You can enjoy this attraction free of charge.

Historic Governors' Mansion

The elegant Historic Governors' Mansion served as the home for Wyoming's governor and family from 1905 to 1976. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays in summertime (with shorter hours/days in the off-season), the mansion welcomes visitors to take free, self-guided tours. Learn about the mansion's various occupants and historical relevancy as you stroll through its period-furnished rooms.

Wyoming State Museum

Just a few steps away from the Wyoming State Capitol is the Wyoming State Museum. Open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Saturday in summer (with shorter hours in winter), this free museum illustrates various stories from Wyoming's past. Exhibits include dinosaurs, coal mining, pioneers, American Indians, and Wyoming's role in promoting women's rights.
