You can explore coal and gold mines in Canada.

Retired coal and gold mines exist throughout Canada. Many of the mines have since been converted and repurposed to be tourist sites, offering daily excursions through the closed mines. Visitors can explore the coal miner's paths from the early 20th Century at mines in Alberta or venture through old gold mines in Ontario and British Columbia.

  1. Bellevue Mining Tours

    • With Bellevue Mine Tours, knowledgeable guides take visitors through tunnels that were used by coal miners from 1903 to 1961.The guides explain mining techniques and point out artifacts as the tour group navigates through the tunnels. Tours are offered from May 11 through Labor Day weekend and occur every 30 minutes. Helmets and lamps are provided for safety and authenticity.

    Timmins Underground Gold Mine Tour

    • Discovered in 1909 by Benny Hollinger, the Hollinger Gold Mine was once one of the richest gold mines in the West. Today the mine is the site for the Timmins Underground Gold Mine Tour. Visitors of the mine are provided with hard hats, lamps, belts, coveralls and boots. Experienced miners take tour groups down into the the gold mine where guests can witness the operation of a scaling bar, a slusher, a much machine and an operating jack-leg drill. On the surface, visitors can look through memorabilia at the Hollinger House, try their luck at the Prospector's Gaven where they might find a gold nugget or explore the Prospector's Trail. Tours are available year-round, though tour times and days vary by season.

    Rossland Goldmine Tour

    • Located in Rossland, the Mountain-top city of BC, Canada, the Rossland Musuem and Goldmine Tours offers daily tours of the Le Roi Gold Mine. Out of operation since 1929, the Le Roi Gold Mine is inspected yearly by the BC government for it's safety. Guides take visitors through the restored section of the once famous Le Roi Gold Mine which looks exactly as it did back in the early part of the 20th century. On the tour guests can expect to see a diamond drill machine, fault planes from prehistoric rocks and earthquakes plus displays of drills and other tools. On the surface, guests can visit the museum, Geology building and try their luck at panning for gold. Tours are available year-round, though tour times and days vary by season.
