Phlebotomists provide a valuable service in several medical settings. These allied health professionals draw blood samples from patients and ensure that those samples reach the laboratory for proper testing. Massachusetts has several phlebotomy programs that prepare students to follow universal precautions, draw blood samples, prepare samples for laboratory testing and work with different types of blood test tubes.

  1. Northern Essex Community College

    • Northern Essex Community College offers a phlebotomy certificate program composed of 18 credits of coursework. Classes in this program include English composition, medical language I and II, phlebotomy and a phlebotomy externship. The externship provides real-world work experience in a professional phlebotomy setting. This program also requires students to complete a computer elective. Upon graduation, students become eligible to sit for the phlebotomy technician category of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists examination. Northern Essex Community College has campuses in Haverhill, Lawrence and Andover.

    Quincy College

    • Quincy College offers a phlebotomy certificate program that takes two semesters to complete. Prospective students must have a high school diploma and all required immunizations. Students must also pass a Massachusetts Criminal History Systems Board background check before enrolling in the program. Coursework in this program includes an orientation to health care, medical terminology, applied anatomy and physiology, phlebotomy and interpersonal communication.

    Mount Wachusett Community College

    • Mount Wachusett Community College offers a phlebotomy certificate of completion, which prepares students to work as phlebotomists in hospitals, surgical centers, medical practices and independent laboratories. Students must successfully pass criminal and sexual offender information checks and purchase their own liability insurance prior to enrollment. Coursework for the phlebotomy certificate of completion includes three credits of phlebotomy training and a four-credit phlebotomy practicum. MWCC indicates that students can transfer three credits from the phlebotomy certificate program to the medical assisting degree program if desired.

    American Red Cross

    • The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts offers a phlebotomy program for students at least 18 years of age. According to the American Red Cross, the tuition fee includes all required textbooks, malpractice insurance, medical scrubs or a lab coat, clinical internship fees and the exam application fee for the phlebotomy technician examination offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Enrollees must have a high school diploma and current photo identification. The American Red Cross also requires successful completion of a background check and reading assessment test prior to enrollment.

    Springfield Technical Community College

    • Springfield Technical Community College offers a phlebotomy technician program for students who already have a high school diploma. This program offers instruction in lab testing, infection control, patient relations, venipuncture, capillary puncture, anatomy and physiology of the blood vessels, laboratory safety and specimen processing. The STCC program description indicates that students also complete a clinical placement program that lasts two to three weeks. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) has approved this program, and students who complete the program successfully are eligible to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam offered by the NHA.
