Playable XBox Games for XBox 360
Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the successor to the original Xbox game console. The Xbox original consoles, accessories and video games have been discontinued by Microsoft due to heightened demand for the newest generation system. There has been some confusion for owners of the Xbox 360 as to whether their original Xbox games will play on the newer model. Many Xbox original titles are available to purchase and download on Xbox Live Marketplace. Backward-compatible Games
-
A trend in modern video game development has been to make old video games from previous systems backward-compatible with the next generation system. Backward compatibility assures consumers that the money they spent on older games doesn't go to waste when they decide to trade up for the latest model. The Xbox 360 has done this for customers who still want to play their Xbox original games, though not all Xbox originals have made the cut. Many of the Xbox original games that are compatible with the Xbox 360 are best-selling games, award-winners and series titles.
Award-Winners and Best-Sellers
-
The flagship title for the Xbox systems has been developer Bungie's "Halo" series. Released in November 2001 as a launch title for the Xbox orginal console and rated Mature by the Electronic Software Rating Board (ESRB) for blood, gore and violence, "Halo" changed first-person-shooting games with its innovative gameplay and fun multiplayer platform. This spawned a 2004 sequel titled "Halo 2," which was similarly rated Mature for blood, gore, violence and language. "Halo" and "Halo 2" became best-sellers and won several awards, including Internet Gaming Network's (IGN) Game of the Year for 2001. Both games are compatible with the Xbox 360.
Another groundbreaking and award-winning title released exclusively for the Xbox is Lionhead Studios' "Fable," released in August 2004 and rated Mature for blood, sexual themes, strong language and violence. "Fable" is a single-player roleplaying/adventure game that allows players to make moral decisions that alters gameplay. "Fable" gained such recognition that it was named in "Time" magazine's "Top Ten Games of 2004."
Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto" series has left a bloody path of destruction in its wake, which carries over to the Xbox 360. Titles released for the Xbox original include "Grand Theft Auto 3" and "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," released in 2003 as a double-pack, and "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," released in 2005. All "Grand Theft Auto" titles are rated Mature for blood, gore, intense violence, strong language, strong sexual content and use of drugs. The appeal of the "Grand Theft Auto" series comes from the open-world environments, the vast variety of weapons and vehicles and the ability to do whatever you want within this virtual world.

Sports fans will be happy to know that many titles and series make the crossover, including Electronic Arts' "NBA Live" series and Visual Concepts' "NFL 2K" series. Compatible titles don't stop on the field, however, as racing games such as Tiburon Entertainment's "NASCAR Thunder" and Criterion Studios' "Burnout" also make the cut. Hunting enthusiasts can enjoy Fun Labs' hunting series "Cabela's," which is also backward compatible.
