The city of Glendale is located in the Los Angeles County in southern California. Glendale boasts a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making it a perfect area for growing roses. Roses are a perennial vine or shrub that bloom best in full sun. There are many classes of rose from the old garden roses, such as Alba or Gallica, to the modern garden roses, like the hybrid tea or the floribunda. Within these classes are thousands of cultivars and colors.

  1. The Pageant of Roses Garden

    • Just 20 miles south of Glendale, The Pageant of Roses Garden in Whittier boasts over 70 beds with more than 7,000 rose plants. The garden boasts 600 different cultivars blooming in varying colors, filling the summer air with tantalizing scent. This southern California garden was established in the 1950s as part of the Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary and is one of the test gardens for the All-America Rose Selection and the American Rose Society Award of Excellent Miniature program. The garden opens at 8 a.m. every day of the year. It closes at dusk. The garden is free to the public.

    Exposition Park Rose Garden

    • Exposition Part Rose Garden is minutes away from Glendale and boasts more than 20,000 rose bushes in over 190 varieties. Beautiful white-lattice gazebos dot the garden, providing shelter and a place to view the ocean of blooming roses. Between April and November, when the roses are in full bloom, this park is a popular location for weddings. Exposition Park Rose Garden is operated by the city of Los Angeles and is free to the public. The gates open at 9:00 a.m. and close at sunset. The park is closed for annual maintenance from January 1st to March 15th every year.

    Descanso Gardens International Rosarium

    • Descanso Gardens is a large, sprawling garden located just miles from Glendale. One of the many attractions to these gardens is The International Rosarium. This 5-acre garden contains more than 3,000 roses. Within the Descanso Gardens International Rosarium, you will find smaller theme gardens containing significant collections of different species of rose.

      The Gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the year except Christmas. There is free parking but the general admission is $8.00. Seniors or students $6 and Children 5 to 12 years old are $3. Children under 5 are free. Descanso Gardens is wheel-chair friendly and provides wheel chairs upon request at the visitor's center.
