What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Bursting Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts form on the inside or outside of the ovaries. Most ovarian cysts are benign and do not cause any symptoms, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Cysts that twist or rupture cause a serious medical condition. Women who experience the symptoms of a ruptured or burst ovarian cyst should seek medical attention immediately.

Abdominal Pain

Ovarian cysts may cause mild abdominal ache or pressure in the abdomen without rupture. When a rupture occurs, the pain is acute, sharp and sudden. The fluid from the cyst may leak into the abdomen and cause irritation of the abdominal lining, according to NYU Langone Medical Center. The pain is in the lower part of the abdomen and may occur on one or both sides. Women who have not experienced pain with an ovarian cyst before it ruptures will find the pain sudden and sharp. Those who have experienced pain with a benign ovarian cyst that has not ruptured will find the pain increases gradually when the cyst bursts.

Nausea

Functional ovarian cysts do not cause symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Nausea is present when the cyst ruptures or becomes twisted. Patients with ovarian cysts who experience sharp abdominal pain and nausea should seek immediate medical attention. A ruptured ovarian cyst that is not treated may cause serious complications such as hemorrhage and infection.

Fever

Fever may be present during an ovarian cyst rupture, since one of the complications that can arise with ruptured ovarian cysts is infection. Fever may be an indication of a ruptured cyst.

Distended Abdomen

Some women experience a distended and tender abdomen when a cyst ruptures. Hemorrhaging or bloating may occur with an ovarian cyst that has burst. An ovarian cyst also may cause bloating without rupture.

Dizziness, Weakness, Fainting

A loss of blood from a homorraghic cyst may cause dizziness, weakness and fainting in some patients and requires immediate medical attention.
