According to Literary Liaisons, the history of tea dates back 5000 years to ancient China. By 1650, Americans were already consuming tea. In the 1880s, tea rooms were places where refreshments such as hot meals, bread and pastries were served. Today, tea rooms exist all around America. In Atlanta, Georgia, along with serving tea, some tea rooms have full menus.

      • Mary Mac's was established in 1945. The owner, Mary McKinsey decided to use her Southern cooking skills to earn funds during the post-World War II times. Over the next 30 years, Mary transformed the business from a small tea room into a popular Southern restaurant. In 1994, John Ferrell bought Mary Mac's Tea Room.

        The menu includes appetizers, tea room favorites such as chicken pot pie, grill orders such as fried gulf shrimp, side dishes and homemade desserts. The southern special and beverage list includes coffee and tea. An assortment of wines and beers are also available. The restaurant also features carryout service, meeting rooms, off-site catering, and is open to private parties.

      Tahcha Tea House

      • According to Neighbor Newspapers, the owners of Tahcha, Tahirih Merkal and Charity Hofert, created the tea house so residents in the neighborhood would have somewhere to go and relax. At Tahcha, visitors can choose from a selection of 52 different types of teas such as white, black, green and herbal teas. The menu includes pastries and snacks. One of Tahcha's goals is to get people to see how fun tea can be. Tahcha also hosts events throughout the week such as live music, charity parties and tea tasting.

      Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party

      • The owner of Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party, Katrell Christie, is a lot of things to many people. She is also a retired Atlanta Rollergirl, a humanitarian and a photographer. Her project, the Learning Tea, helps to fund education in a poorly funded government school in India.

        When most people visit Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party they buy ice cream, sandwiches, tea or look through the many books displayed in the tea room. The tiny shop has a charming décor furnished like a 1940s tea room and music that mirrors that era. The shop offer 65 types of tea, breakfast, and lunch/dinner, plus assorted fruit smoothies. Free Wi-Fi is also available. Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party is also open to private events such as baby showers, bridal parties, or birthday parties.
