  1. Habitat for Humanity

    • Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian-based organization that helps needy families build homes. Families unable to afford decent housing can apply for consideration. If selected, the family partners with Habitat for Humanity volunteers to physically build their house. Habitat for Humanity then sells the house to the family at an affordable rate.

      Families who receive assistance from Habitat for Humanity also agree to volunteer on other homebuilding projects. Volunteer opportunities with the organization are available in most cities. The nonprofit also has special programs for youth groups and an international program.

    Humane Society

    • The Humane Society is an animal rights organization seeking an end to animal cruelty by raising awareness about issues such as puppy mills, animal sport-fighting and inhumane food industry practices. The Humane Society needs volunteer veterinarians, vet technicians and vet students to staff animal hospitals, rehabilitation centers and no-kill shelters. People with no veterinary experience can volunteer as shelter staff members or community educators.

    ProLiteracy

    • ProLiteracy is a literacy advocacy organization that provides literacy education, training and development to children and adults. The organization also raises awareness about literacy issues and lobbies for pro-literacy legislation. ProLiteracy sponsors literacy volunteer programs throughout the world. Volunteers tutor in the areas of childhood literacy, adult literacy, fire and home safety education and English as a second language.

    Big Brothers Big Sisters

    • Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth mentoring program that pairs at-risk children with adults who serve as role models. These mentor partnerships help reduce school truancy and dropout rates, decrease the risk of drug and alcohol use and improve school performance and family relationships. Volunteers, called "Bigs," spend time with their "Littles" each month engaging in activities such as sports, games, cooking or sharing meals, hiking and trips to museums.
