Description of a Teacher's Duties
Teachers are the foundation of a good education. Through a combination of dedication and persistence, they ensure their students become productive individuals with the knowledge required to function in society. Teachers assign homework, grade assignments and assess student progress, but their duties don't stop there. Teachers often function as mentors, role models and friends.

Instruction
-
A teacher's primary duty is to facilitate classroom instruction through preparing lesson plans with an appropriate time line, executing the lessons contained within, assigning classwork, homework and special projects to reinforce designated lessons, and assessing and reporting student attendance and progress.
Examination
-
Teachers are responsible for testing students and recording the results in order to determine their level of understanding regarding the coursework presented. States often mandate standardized testing of public-school students in order to achieve a comparative overview of student progress. Teachers prepare students for these exams and administer the tests within the parameters of the provided instructions.

Discipline
-
Teachers ensure that their students understand what behavior is expected of them inside and outside the classroom. If students misbehave, teachers are responsible for administering discipline, so long as the teacher does not treat, speak to or touch the student inappropriately. Teacher discipline may include contacting a student's parent or guardian, or referring the student to a higher authority, such as the assistant principal or principal.
Counsel and Encouragement
-
Teachers are responsible for the well being of their students during the school day. This means advising students on academic and social matters, and observing and reporting whether students' basic needs are being met at home, including adequate food, clothing, shelter, physical safety and emotional stability. Teachers are duty bound to meet with the parents or guardians of their students about academic and social progress.
Professional Conduct
-
Teachers lead by example. They must conduct themselves professionally at all times, including manner of speech, writing, dress and personal grooming. Teachers must be respectful when they refer to and address students within the school.
Administrative Duties
-
Teachers are required to perform certain administrative duties, including attending staff meetings, training workshops and performance reviews. Teachers may also be required to perform student-related duties outside their classrooms, including supervising the lunchroom, playground, before-and-after-school safety and study periods.
