Onlookers at a mountain man festival

The glory days of America's wild frontier are long gone, but you can take a trip back to that exciting time with a visit to a mountain man festival. Rub shoulders with a trader dressed in buckskins or watch a knife-throwing contest. There's something for every family member to see and do when you rendezvous at one of Missouri's many mountain man festivals.

  1. Little Niangua Mountain Man Festival

    • You'll be back in the 1840s when you hear sounds of the mountain men telling tall tells and smell gunpowder in the air at The Little Niangua Mountain Man Festival. This festival runs three days each April on the banks of the Little Niangua River. The site is at Lake of the Ozarks, 15 miles northwest of Camdenton, Missouri. Period events include black powder gun shoots, storytelling, frontier re-enactments, knife and tomahawk throwing contests, and vendors selling food and hand-made gifts. Admission is free and open to the public. For those wishing to stay overnight, there are primitive and modern campsites with fees starting at $15

    • Pack your family's satchel for a 19th century rendezvous with the traders and Native Americans of the frontier at the Osage River Mountain Man Rendezvous and Muzzleloader Shoot. The three-day event each September draws crowds to the Silver Star Campground at the foot of Bagnell Dam in Central Missouri's beautiful Lake of the Ozarks. Get an up-close look at the everyday lives of the mountain men and Native Americans as they live and work in tents and tepees. Don't miss the anvil launching, frontier songs and stories, and tents filled with gear and souvenirs. Festival admission for the entire weekend is $5 for adults; children age 15 and under are free with a paid adult.
