Junk Decorating Home Ideas
While you may not have yet heard of junk decorating, it is an eco-friendly design trend that is gaining attention. The basic theme of this decorating style is to use furniture, fabrics, architectural decorative elements, lumber and metal scraps that most people would normally trash and instead repurpose them to create wonderful new pieces. Your new products can range from furniture, pillows and lamps to fabulous (and innovative) wall hangings or art pieces. Getting started is easy---just look around your house for some old items that you might consider as "dumpster ready" and then start thinking creatively. Does this Spark an idea?

One-of-a-Kind Silverware Decor
-
According to HGTV's website and their television show, "Trash to Treasure," use old silverware you were about to discard or some inexpensive pieces that you picked up at a garage sale or flea market as a foundation for many junk decorating craft ideas. Glue some spoons to an outdated picture frame or to one you made using old scraps of lumber. You can create an eye-catching starburst mirror by gluing a round mirror in the center of a piece of scrap wood that is also round. Use an epoxy glue to adhere knives, forks and spoons around the mirror to create your new, retro-style mirror.
Attention-Grabbing Headboard
-
According to funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com, use a large, old sign to create a fun and dramatic headboard in a bedroom. You can often find old signs in your local antique store or architectural salvage shops, or try online at websites like eBay.com. If you find more than one sign you like, make a patchwork quilt display using several signs and letting a color-painted wall show through to create a patchwork quilt effect. Another idea is to use old lumber, like from an old barn, and create a colorful, masculine headboard using vintage license plates. To give this project special meaning, use license plates from states that the bed's owner has visited.

Delightful "Memory" Pillow
-
If you have or were fortunate enough to have had a wonderful grandmother (or great-grandmother) who had some beautiful handkerchiefs or tea towels, you can use them to make gorgeous accent pillow covers for standard pillow forms. You can use two patterns that complement each other or just one pattern for the front, along with a solid coordinating fabric for the back. If your handkerchiefs or tea towels are an odd size, you can either cut them down and appliqué pieces to a solid piece of fabric or add some fabric borders (like a mat in a picture frame) to increase the size so the covers will fit any accent pillow forms you purchase. Once you have made your pillow cases, you will have a wonderful way to remember your grandma or loved one every time you see the pillow with her fabric. These also make great gifts to a special friend or family member who will treasure it as much as you would. See Reference 3 for some design inspiration.
