Christmas Rooftop Decorating Ideas

Get creative with Christmas decorations.

Decorating your rooftop can attract spectators from blocks away. Rooftops are great areas for decorations because of the large amount of space available; especially if your roof is relatively flat. Consider adding rooftop decorations if you plan to enter a Christmas light contest or just want to explore a new decoration "territory." Use proper safety techniques when decorating your roof and always have a spotter present when on the roof. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Lights

    • Outdoor lights are relatively inexpensive and can accent the peaks of your roof well with the rest of your outdoor decorations. Depending on the lights available, seek out white lights, colored lights and flashing lights. Use lights to string across your roof in lines or crisscross designs for a basic pattern. Spell out things such as "Merry Christmas," "Ho! Ho! Ho!" or "Santa, Stop Here!"

    Santa Decorations

    • Shop around various stores to see what kinds of outdoor Santa decorations are available. Inflatable or lightweight decorations work great for easy set-up, but be sure they are securely fastened to the roof so the weather doesn't affect them. Display Santa and his eight tiny reindeer as if they just landed at your house. You can even make it look like Santa is just getting out of the sleigh or reaching for his bag of toys. Purchase or design a giant target for Santa's sleigh to land on. It can be the traditional red and white color or red and green for the Christmas spirit. Write "Welcome, Santa!," "Santa, land here!," or "Infinite Milk and Cookies Here!" for a fun, personal effect to the decoration.

    Commercial Decorations

    • If your company celebrates Christmas and has a skyscraper (or other office building) that your community can easily see, consider using large rooftop decorations. As of March, 2010, Bronnerscommercial.com offers customers a variety of these decorations anywhere from roughly $6,000 to $15,000. The decorations featured are neon signs of peeking Santa as well as peeking reindeer. Each sign is sold separately.

    Rooftop Toyland

    • Use your rooftop as a setting for Santa's workshop. Build or purchase giant present boxes, dolls and "stuffed" animals to create the scene. If you're entering a contest, for example, set up a train set and some remote control cars for added effect the night before the contest. Line the cars and train up in a position where spectators can easily view the cars. Stand outside during the judging process and use a remote control for the cars and train to surprise the judges and any spectators passing by.
