Learn about log cabins with fun hands-on projects.

Log cabins are part of the fabric of America. They evoke images of a more rustic housing form of the past, but modern log cabins are still built today. Given the rich history of log cabins, children will enjoy learning about them. Projects can make learning about log cabins more engaging.

  1. Log Cabin Poster

    • To create posters, children can read about the history of log cabins and what life was like living in log cabins. Topics can include why log cabins were popular, how long they typically took to build and the advantages of living in one. Children can present posters to the class when they are finished.

    Log Cabin Diorama

    • Creating a diorama allows students to create a three-dimensional image that includes a typical setting surrounding a log cabin. Log cabins have traditionally been used as school houses, barns, homes and other buildings. Children can read about log cabins in different settings and then create a shoebox diorama with toy trees, toy animals and a paper log cabin. They can write a short paragraph about the type of building they created and why they chose it.

    Log Cabin Structure

    • Children can view images of various log cabins and have the opportunity to build their own log cabins. They can create log cabins out of Popsicle sticks, paper logs or pretzel sticks. This activity can stimulate the children's imagination if they decide on other materials to create their cabins. They can also experiment with different ways to hold their cabins together by using glue, tape or frosting.

    Story

    • Children can watch an excerpt from a western-themed television show or movie that depicts life in a log cabin. Afterwards, they can write stories that have a main character living in a log cabin or write a paper in favor of or against living in a log cabin. Children can share their essays with the class when they are finished writing them.
