Different Kinds of Smoked Sausage
When a person thinks of sausage, a particular image may come to mind. There are more than a dozen different types of sausage, several of which fall under the category of smoked sausage. Smoked sausage can be used in many different meals, from a simple hot dog in a bun to a grilled kabob served with vegetables. Does this Spark an idea?

Knackwurst

A German smoked sausage, knackwurst is made by mixing garlic, pork and veal into a casing. Before a knackwurst is smoked, it is aged for about five days to let the garlic flavor seep throughout the sausage.
Mortadella

Mortadella is a pork-based sausage that includes small portions of fat embedded into the meat. Along with the fat, the sausage is seasoned with nutmeg, pepper and different types of mixtures such as nuts, berries or olives. This sausage is commonly found in Italy.

Bratwurst

Wurst is the word for "sausage" in German, and bratwurst hails from Germany. Bratwurst can be made with pork, beef, veal or a mixture of the meats. These sausages are popular all over Europe, as well as in the United States. They are commonly sold by street vendors and at sporting events.
Kielbasa

Common in Canada and the United States, kielbasa serves as a hot dog replacement and is used in a variety of recipes. The sausage features a thick skin filled with pork and spices. There are variants of kielbasa, such as liver kielbasa, in which the pork is replaced with a liver and rice mixture. Liver kielbasa is popular in such countries as Hungary.
Andouille

A French smoked sausage, andouille is made of a mixture containing wine, onions, peppers and pork. When cooked, the sausage is usually cut into thin circle shapes, like an onion. It can be served on a bun, sauteed with peppers or served grilled.
Linguiça

Commonly referred to as Portuguese sausage, linguiça is created with a mixture of garlic, onions, paprika and pork. It is so popular in Hawaii that it is a common menu item at several restaurants there, including McDonald's.
Hot Dog

One of the most common types of smoked sausage in the United States is the hot dog. Hot dogs are made from a variety of meats, such as pork, chicken and beef. Some varieties are made from only one type of meat, while others mix a combination of meats with spices. Some smoked hot dogs may include other ingredients, such as cheese.
