Interactive Public Safety Games for Kids
More than 2,000 children younger than 15 die as a result of a home injury each year, according to the Home Safety Council. Causes of death include fire, drowning and poisoning. Games teach kids how to create a fire escape plan. The National Fire Protection Association uses "Sparky" the fire dog to engage kids. Well-created interactive games with Sparky teach kids how to "stop, drop and roll" if they are on fire, make a home safety list and create a digital fire escape plan.
The Internet Public Library Organization has a site with games to teach kids about poison: what it is, who can get hurt and where to watch out for it at home.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) uses a soccer-playing goat character named "Kidd Safety" to teach kids about bicycle and scooter safety. As kids earn points, they advance to a game which takes place in a park setting. They get tested on how well they apply their newly learned safety knowledge.
The Institute for Transportation Research created a website that is entirely focused on school bus safety. Kids choose from eight interactive games that provide important tips and tools.

Games aim to prepare---not scare---kids. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has more than 20 interactive games on a special site for kids. Children learn how to prepare for---and what to do in case of---hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and more. The site does a good "child-friendly" job preparing kids for weather-related emergencies and natural disasters.

"McGruff" the crime-fighting dog is a popular character loved by kids and adults everywhere. He has a top-flight website with interactive games to give kids important tips on how to play it safe in more than 30 situations. McGruff's game arsenal includes puzzles, videos, quizzes and more. He even helps kids figure out safe ways to deal with playground bullies as well as physical and online predators. There are also games to help younger kids figure out who the good guys are, such as police, firefighters, paramedics and lifeguards.
"Crucial Crew" is an interesting British website for kids everywhere, ages 8 and up. The site poses over a dozen situations on everything from gangs and guns to bank robberies and more. Kids make choices and learn what the consequences could be if they choose wrong.
