Healthcare is among the fields of study at Illinois trade schools.

In addition to large, traditional, four-year universities such as the University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University and DePaul University, Illinois is home to a number of trade schools. These post-secondary institutions grant certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in a wide array of subjects, including culinary arts, health care and construction. With locations throughout the state, Illinois' trade schools provide services to help students succeed during their programs and beyond.

  1. Illinois School of Health Careers

    • Founded in 1990, Illinois School of Health Careers is a private trade school with two locations in Chicago. Approximately 300 students attend classes at each campus, working toward diplomas in dental assisting, medical assisting and patient care technology. The school offers open enrollment to any student who is 17 and has a high school diploma or the equivalent. Federal grants and loan programs are available for eligible students. The Career Center at the Illinois School of Health Careers helps student write resumes, prepare for interviews and search for jobs after graduation.

    Midwest Technical Institute

    • With branches in Springfield and East Peoria, Midwest Technical Institute opened in 1995 and has approximately 152 students enrolled at each location as of 2010. All students must have a high school diploma or GED and take an admissions test to enroll at the school. The school grants certificates in welding, medical assisting, medical coding, dental assisting, massage therapy, pharmacy technology and nurse assisting. All of the programs require seven to nine months to complete. Eligible students can apply for federal financial aid programs. The school's job placement program boasts an 85 to 90 percent success rate with finding positions for graduates, reports the school's website.

    Illinois Welding School

    • A private institution, Illinois Welding School has locations in Bartonville and Romeoville. The school does not require applicants to have a high school diploma or GED, but students must be age 18 or older and have good eyesight. Students can choose to study production, structural and pipe welding. Each program requires 350 to 525 hours of study to complete. There is also a welding refresher course for professionals in the field. Although the school does not participate in federal financial aid, Illinois Welding School offers tuition payment plans and has many financial institutions to partner with to provide loans to offset the cost of tuition.

    The Illinois Institute of Art

    • The Illinois Institute of Art is a private, for-profit trade school with branches in Schaumburg and Chicago. Both locations opened in 1916 and offer certificate and associate degree programs in fashion design, graphic arts, computer animation, professional baking, hotel management and culinary arts. The school arranges for students in most programs to participate in internships prior to graduation. In addition to its traditional daytime courses, the school also offers evening and weekend programs for working adults. The school offers free health care, tutoring and counseling services. Federal, state, veterans and vocational rehabilitation financial aid are available for eligible students.
