Iowa Driving Laws for Teens
All states have different driving laws and requirements for new teen drivers who are, by statistics, the most dangerous drivers on the road. The teen driving laws in the state of Iowa are no different, requiring teens to be of a certain age and have a certain amount of experience before they can get behind the wheel of a car.

Graduated Driver's License
-
Teens in Iowa now are required to have a graduated driver's license, which means they won't get their driver's license until the age of 18. This requires them to spend more time driving with their parents or an adult guardian who will help them learn the rules of the road and how to drive safely and defensively. This policy has been shown to greatly reduce accidents and risk factors to minors who have just gotten their license. Teenagers must first complete the requirements involved with receiving an instruction permit and an intermediate license before receiving their graduated license from the state.
Instruction Permit
-
The instruction permit in Iowa is available to teens who are at least 14 years of age. The applicant must have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian and must be signed in the presence of a State certified examiner. Applicants must also pass a vision and basic driving knowledge test.
Once they have received their driving permit, they must hold it for at least six months before trying to attain an intermediate permit. They must also do a lot of driving with a licensed driver who is a parent, guardian or over the age of 25; driving 20 hours, at least 2 of which should be at night. They must also complete a 30-hour Driver's Education course mandated by the state.

Intermediate Permit
-
The intermediate permit in Iowa is the last permit a driver must receive before getting their graduate permit or full license. Drivers must be at least 16 years of age and hold onto this permit for at least 12 months. They may drive without an adult in the car between the hours of 5 in the morning and 12:30 in the morning, but must be supervised by a parent, legal guardian or adult over the age of 25 if it is outside that time period, or have a written consent form available. They must also complete ten hours of supervised driving, two of which should be at night. They must also be accident or violation free in the time this license is held. This remains in effect until the applicant turns 18 years old.
