Elementary Science Activities & Themes
Elementary science is full of discovery and exploration. Fueling children's imagination is easy with fun science themes and activities geared for elementary students. Create an educational learning experience by tying science themes in with themes kids are interested in already, such as art and games.
-
Animal Habitats
-
Create animal habitats while learning about animals and where they live. Each child picks an animal they are interested in and researches their natural habitat using the Internet or books from the library. Use actual materials to create a smaller version of the animal's habitat, such as sticks and dirt for a rabbits burrow. An empty shoebox can be used as the base for the animal habitats.
Dinosaurs on the Earth
-
Imagine that there are dinosaurs still roaming the Earth. How would their lives be different from the past? Would humans and dinosaurs be able to live together? Have elementary students create a drawing of what the world would be like today if dinosaurs still existed. Encourage kids to use the Internet or books from the library to help make their drawing as realistic as possible.

Cloud Watching
-
Take students outdoors on a nice day for some cloud watching. Make drawings of the different types of clouds seen in the sky, along with notes about how the clouds are behaving. Research the clouds to determine what types they are, cumulus, cumulonimbus, cirrus or stratus. Each child can create an artwork showing the different types of clouds using construction paper, glue and pulled apart cotton balls. Clouds are a small part of the theme for the sky and atmosphere for elementary science.
Human Outline
-
Place large sheets of bulletin board paper on the floor and have children help each other make outlines of their bodies. Once the outlines are finished, use markers or crayons to add all the internals that are found in the human body, along with other essentials such as bones and muscles. Learning about the human body can be used for many elementary science activities for children.
