Law Schools in Canada

Law Schools in Canada thumbnail
Canada is home to a number of prominent law schools.

Law schools in Canada generally require a three-year program of study. Law schools differ in quality according to the degrees they offer, their faculty and according to which areas of law they emphasize. Students planning to study in Canada have a number of opportunities to study at prominent universities with international reputations for excellence.

  1. Unvirsity of Toronto

    • The University of Toronto's law program is considered to be the best in Canada. Maclean's, a prominent rankings publication, rated the University of Toronto as Canada's top law program as of September, 16, 2009. One of the major benefits to Toronto's law program is that it offers the J.D., or Juris Doctor degree. Most Canadian law schools still offer the LL.B., or Bachelor of Laws degree, and Toronto was one of the first to make this change in 2001. The J.D. degree, which is a graduate degree, gives graduates the ability to work within both the Canadian and American law systems whereas the LL.B. is an undergraduate degree that requires additional training before the recipient can practice law in the U.S. The LL.B. is generally not recognized in the United States. The Toronto law faculty is known for its work and research in the fields of legal theory, international human rights, economic law, international law and corporate law.

    University of British Columbia

    • Students attending the University of British Columbia's law school, rated fourth overall by Maclean's, have the opportunity to pursue the J.D. degree as well. UBC's law school is one of the more innovative programs in the country, allowing students to pursue legal research. Students also contribute to prominent publications such as the UBC Law Review and the Canadian Journal of Family Law. Students can pursue joint degree programs such as the joint J.D./M.B.A. program and the J.D./M.A. degree in Asia Pacific policy studies. UBC offers a Ph.D. in law as well.

    University of Victoria

    • The University of Victoria is another highly respected law school in British Columbia. Like UBC, the University of Victoria offers law students a chance to obtain a Ph.D. degree to do advanced research in the field of law; the university does not, as of 2010, grant J.D degrees. The University of Victoria provides students with hands-on clinical training experience in a variety of fields that include criminal, environmental and business law. The university's law school also sponsors a number of research centers such as the Demcon--Consortium on Democratic Constitutionalism, the Institute for Dispute Resolution, the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Eco-Research Chair in Environmental Law and Policy. Maclean's rated the University of Victoria just behind UBC as the fifth best program in the nation.
