Balmoral castle The main cities in Northern Scotland are Aberdeen on the East coast and Inverness on the Moray Firth. Aberdeen is known as the "Granite City" because of its many buildings constructed from the stone. Glamis castle, setting for Shakespeare's "Macbeth," and Balmoral castle, at the foot of Lochnagar Mountain and summer home to Britain's royal family, are two famous sites in the north of Scotland. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is perched above the River Ness and has a castle of its own. ScotRail offers daily service to and from Inverness and Fort William, connecting the Highlands with Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and all major cities in Britain.
