Dogs enjoy Cape Cod because of the pet-friendly hotels, dog-friendly beaches and ferries, and even restaurants where dogs may dine with their humans. The weather on the Cape is moderate in all seasons except winter, so dogs can go out for walks and adventures almost every day. If traveling to Cape Cod with your pet, call hotels ahead of time to ask about regulations regarding pet species and size, and about any pet fees, which are usually nonrefundable. Most pet-friendly hotels accept dogs, and some also welcome cats. Get confirmation details in writing and make sure you understand all pet regulations for Cape Cod hotels and beaches, some of which vary by season.

      The Lamb and Lion Inn is a small luxury pet-friendly hotel with a solar-heated pool, central courtyard, hot tub, fireplace suites and kitchenettes. The inn's dog-friendly acreage is near beaches and trails, and nearby Barnstable Village has a pet-friendly restaurant. Pets must be groomed, nonaggressive and on a leash in common areas. Pets cannot be left in the room unattended. The pet fee is $25 a day, per pet. Both cats and dogs up to 50 pounds are allowed. From mid-June to mid-September, the pet weight limit is 25 pounds. The inn also has packages available that include an in-room dog sitter and a welcome basket for you and your animal. All prices are as of February 2010.

      Sandwich Lodge & Resort is a pet-friendly hotel on six acres that guests can use to play, walk and explore with their animals. Prior arrangements must be made to reserve one of the rooms that allow pets for $15 a night, per pet, as of February 2010. No more than two pets allowed per room. Dogs and cats must be clean and on flea medication, and they should not be left unattended for more than two hours and never at night. Dogs must be leashed when out of the guest room. Various accommodations are available, from rooms with two double beds to a Jacuzzi suite. Sandwich is centrally located on Cape Cod, and the area offers bird sanctuaries, nature centers, a glass museum and the seashore. Dogs are not allowed on Sandwich beaches from May 15 to September 15.

      Centerville Corners Inn is a pet-friendly hotel, where you and your dog can enjoy exploring nearby Craigville Beach on Nantucket Sound during off-season months. The hotel has designated pet rooms and no pets are allowed to be on furniture or left alone in rooms, even in crates. Dog size is restricted to 75 pounds, and pets must be clean, flea-treated and current on rabies vaccinations. Dogs are allowed on parts of many beaches, but, according to the Centerville Corners Inn website, they are not allowed on Barnstable Beaches from May 15-September 15. The pet fee is $15 a night per pet, as of February 2010. For guests who would rather not eat in restaurants every day, many rooms have kitchenettes and there are three grills for cookouts in the inn's back yard. Rooms come with one or two beds and the hotel has an indoor heated pool with a sauna.

      The Simmons Homestead Inn says it welcomes dogs and other small farm animals, and the owner suggests that you "treat the pup like you would at home. Walk him in the back yard, take him with you, or leave him in the room for a while you are out wandering or having dinner." The inn offers expansive yard space and will let you know which beaches, parks and restaurants allow you to bring your dogs. Cats are not allowed in the rooms, but the owner has at least 30 pet cats wandering around the property. Pet owners pay a one-time nonrefundable $25 cleanup fee, as of February 2010. Rooms at the Simmons Inn come with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi connections, coupons for area businesses and one or two beds.

The motel's owners, who have pets of their own, know it's hard to leave your pet behind, so they welcome animals. The nonrefundable pet charge is only $15 a day, per dog or cat, as of February 2010. The rules state that dogs "cannot be left unattended if consistently barking," and owners are asked to leave cell phone numbers so the hotel may has a contact in case of emergency.
