Fort Garry Hotel
-
One of the more opulent hotels in Winnipeg, the Fort Garry Hotel is centrally located, close to the popular Forks, the Parliament building and the Convention Center in downtown Winnipeg. Architecturally distinct and elegant to view, it was built by the Grand Pacific Railway in 1913, only a block away from Union Station, the active railway station that tied east and western Canada together. The Fort Garry was created to cater to the upper crust of the traveling set. It was built in the chateau style of architecture. The beautiful building features turrets, a grand entryway and ornate roof line, a stately part of the Winnipeg skyline. Local legends of hauntings by a previous guest in room 202, who reportedly died in the Fort Garry, are an added feature that sometimes draws curious visitors to the hotel. Features at the hotel include a 24-hour deli and gift shop, breakfast lounge, a fitness center with pool and whirlpool, a jazz and cocktail lounge, 16 meeting rooms, 16 suites and 230 rooms.

The Capri Motel
-
There is nothing fancy about this little motel situated on the south side of Winnipeg on Pembina Highway. The attraction of this budget lodging is the price, the ease of use in not dealing with distant or valet parking and downtown congestion, easy access to local highways, individual kitchenettes and the use of laundry facilities. Although the rooms are modest, it is a good place for families and long-term visitors to stay. It has air conditioning, phone and television service plus free wireless. The hotel offers a discounted weekly or monthly rate. Not centrally located, the Capri Motel is close to bus lines that will take you to any part of Winnipeg. Taxi service is also available if visitors do not want to use their own cars to get around the city. There are restaurants, shopping areas and grocery stores nearby. An added bit of trivia for movie buffs, the Capri Motel was a location for movie sets in the movies "Tamara" and "Seven Times Lucky."
