Interactive Contraction Games
Contractions are formed when two words are combined with the use of an apostrophe. These shortened word forms are commonly used in speech and informal writing. When students begin to learn about contractions, they often struggle to determine how contractions are formed and where the apostrophe should be placed. Teachers can engage their students in the learning of contractions and provide them with a high-interest way to practice their skills by presenting them with a selection of interactive contraction games.

Treasure Trove
-
In this game, players are presented with a treasure chest containing a two-word phrase that can be combined into a contraction. The player must select from several keys, all containing possible contractions. Upon selecting the correct key, the treasure chest opens up, revealing the loot of gold and jewels. If the player correctly answers all questions, he is rewarded with an entertaining monkey cartoon. This game is ideal for early elementary students, as it provides simple contractions that those new to the concept can easily identify.
Catch the Spelling
-
Players practice their contraction spelling skills in this interactive game. Participants must use their arrow keys to move a red cursor across the bottom of their screen and catch falling letters in the appropriate order to spell out a common contraction. Upon correctly spelling the provided contraction, players are given another contraction challenge. If they fail to complete the spelling in the allotted amount of time, the player loses the game and has to start again from the beginning.

Fly By Contractions
-
In this aviation-themed interactive game, players are presented with a contraction and asked to select the words that the contraction combines. The participants select the correct grouping of words by clicking one of an assortment of planes flying across the screen that carry banners containing words. Players must think quickly to figure out the answer and click on the correct plane before it flies away if they want to win this game.
Type the Contraction
-
In this simple game, players are presented with two words that could be combined to form a contraction and are asked to type the contraction using correct spelling and apostrophe placement. If players answer incorrectly, they are presented with the correct response so that they can increase their contraction knowledge base. This game is perfect for students finishing their study of contractions, as players are not provided with any hints but instead must rely upon their knowledge to successfully solve the posed problems.
