London is home to several of the United Kingdom's highest-ranking colleges, and some of these schools are considered among the best in the world.     • University College London (UCL) is a leading research institution, ranked fourth in the Times Higher Education-QS worldwide rankings. Located in the heart of London, near the British Museum, UCL is the oldest university in London, founded in 1826. It has educated 21 Nobel Prize winners and houses the largest European biomedical research center. UCL is also a diverse college, with over 30 percent of its 22,000 students being foreigners, and it offers a huge range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, ranging from ancient history to law to Viking Studies.

    Imperial College

    • Imperial College London is number three on the Independent Complete University Guide 2010's list of top 10 U.K. universities. It is science-based, focusing on engineering, medicine, natural sciences, and business. Founded in 1907, it has over 13,000 students from over 150 countries and has several campuses around London. Imperial offers a wide range of science-based undergraduate and graduate degrees, from aeronautical engineering to zoology.

    King's College

    • King's College is number 11 in the RAE ranking of the top 40 research institutions in the United Kingdom. It is located in central London opposite the River Thames. With over 19,000 undergraduates and postgraduates and a large health care center for students studying to become health care professionals, it houses nine schools: arts and humanities, law, biomedical and health sciences, the Dental Institute, medicine, the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, physical sciences and engineering, the Institute of Psychiatry, and social science and public policy.

    Goldsmiths College

    • Goldsmiths College is a leading London university, famous for its art degree program. Located in southeast London, it is near the Greenwich Royal Observatory and a short bus ride from central London. It has over 6,000 students and has educated many award-winning artists, including Damien Hirst. The school also has study-abroad options for international students who want to study in London for one or two 11-week terms.     London School of Economics

    • The London School of Economics (LSE) ranks fourth in the Independent Complete University Guide 2010's list of top 10 U.K. universities. Founded in 1894, it is located in central London near Covent Garden and is home to 19 research centers and 9,000 students from 140 countries. Nearly half of LSE's staff are from other countries, and 15 Nobel Prize winners have been students or instructors at LSE. LSE is dedicated to the social sciences, including economics, politics, law, sociology, and finance.
